Logo and basic branding for FLOxford, Oxford's local free, libre, and open-source software group

About us
We’re FLOxford, a volunteer group holding talks and workshops about Free/Libre and Open-Source Software (FLOSS) in the city of Oxford, United Kingdom. These talks and workshops cover a range of technical and non-technical topics around FLOSS, from ethics to contributing in various ways, and we’ve also had several about the intersection of FLOSS and academia or research, because some of our members are University researchers or students. (Please note, however, that we are neither affiliated to a University nor exclusively focused on academia.) These events are usually open to all, recorded and streamed online where possible. Our group also has a social aspect, and will probably adopt other aspects in the future, for example visiting external FLOSS conferences as a group.
What we need
We have operated in the past, but without a name or brand identity. We plan to start our next season of events in October 2026, and introduce our brand alongside it. We already have the name FLOxford, but need a logo and branding for it; see the deliverables or email Oliver Geer on o@ogeer.org for more details.
Possible inspiration includes: our past talks and workshops, the Oxford Wikipedia article, and past event recordings. The design should be welcoming to both non-technical and technical people, not suggest any organisational affiliation (we are independent, at least right now), and link clearly to FLOSS and our local nature while not narrowing our possible activities.
Licensing of your contributions
We will assume your logo is Creative Commons Zero dedicated to the public domain, because attributing the logo every time it’s used isn’t feasible, and a brand requires a unique level of control by its represented organisation. I guess FLOxford will have unregistered trademark rights over it. That said, at our discretion and at least subject to our code of conduct, we can attribute you here on our website.
Your style guide document (and, if provided, the poster template), on the other hand, not extending to all designs we make using the style guide, can be licensed under any of the free culture licenses CC0, CC-BY-4.0, or CC-BY-SA-4.0.
Payment
Email me (mailto:o@ogeer.org) with your ideas before commencing work. If I approve your ideas and your result is satisfactory (see the deliverables), I will pay you £15-25 after. This process, but not the price range, is negotiable. I can pay via a bank transfer to the Single Euro Payments Area (which includes the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), or by a PayPal transfer to anywhere.
I won’t pay for AI-generated logos; it feels unjust to pay someone for something that isn’t their work.
