Develop compelling visual designs for the Zulip web and mobile apps. You will have a leading role in developing the vision for a new look and feel for our product.
Work closely with the engineering team to integrate your designs.
Brainstorm, design and implement improvements to the product founded in a deep understanding of user problems, working in a dynamic collaboration with product, engineering, and users.
Refine the look and feel of the Zulip website, so that our message and brand come across loud and clear.

Web design for qutebrowser, a web browser for power users

The qutebrowser project is a web browser for power users, focused on keyboard usage. Its inspired by the vim editor and similar to projects like Tridactyl, Vimperator or Vimium.

As part of the browser, there are various internal web pages, e.g. to view bookmarks or history. The design of those pages is fairly inconsistent and could be improved.

Additionally, it’s planned to switch toolkits for the project’s website qutebrowser.org (from Asciidoc to Sphinx), so a redesign or porting of the existing design to Sphinx is needed. Finally, its development blog (blog.qutebrowser.org) has yet another design which is not in-line with the website.

It’d be great if you used similar projects before (and/or the vim editor, and/or commandline-tools in general), so that you can get a feeling for its userbase. Knowledge of the Python-related frameworks in use (Jinja, Sphinx, Pelican) would be a plus.

Frontend polishing for Identihub

Identihub is free and open source software which lets you host your own branding and visual assets and reshare them easily. It allows for SVG to PNG conversion in any given resolution, embedding and linking to assets and organizing your projects within your organization. We currently are in need for someone who can improve Identihub’s UX by adding more feedback menus and interactions, redesign modal menus and the main side bar for assets. Currently Identihub is not really working well on mobile, so making it responsive is also needed. Identihub is ReactJS in the Frontend and Laravel (PHP) in the Backend.

We have a small budget we could spend on this. Let’s talk.

About Outreachy

Participants of Outreachy work with an open source organization (in our case Discourse) on a 3 month programming project. It’s similar to events like Google Summer of Code, however the aim of Outreachy is to provide a collaborative environment in which newcomers from underrepresented backgrounds get an opportunity to learn from and contribute to FOSS by doing paid, full-time work.

Participation is open internationally to all women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Additionally, it’s open to residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.

Kiwi IRC web client design

Kiwi IRC is a modern web IRC client built with Node.js and Vue.

The lead developer Darren aka prawnsalad could use a hand with the interface presentation and layout.

I believe with this modern web client approach we can get rid of the image of IRC as a clunky and opaque interaction tool. Having the power of server-side makes all sorts of magical things possible (storage, data processing etc.). The ideal would be to GUIfy everything, so the non-techy user will not have to face any frightening /commands. I guess the hardest will be inventing a GUI for even the ChanServ commands like setting various flags for channels.

Perhaps the first step would be conducting a competitive analysis of new and emerging chat platforms.
