The design function at OFN is very new and growing and as such is slow moving. This is a project that needs your design support but much is going to be ‘self started’ and while Eriol will be there to help guide you through an open source design project there is still a longer embdedding process that design needs to do before it can move through the ‘pipeline’ of OSS work in OFN quicker.

Join one of our volunteer onboarding calls that happen on every Thursday at alternating times for different timezones.

The first and third Thursdays of a month are at 09.00am GMT UK time. UK, EU, MENA, Pan-Africa, JST, AEST and India timezone friendly

Flat Infographic Illustrations/icons

As part of the Open Tech Fund Usability Lab, we at Ura Design (https://ura.design) are redesigning OTF’s Impact page: https://www.opentech.fund/results/impacts-and-outcomes/

We are currently in the process of doing so. As part of this, we will also require 10-20 illustrations/icons to illustrate each data point. The preferred illustration style will be flat(ish) and hopefully offer a base for an illustration style we can use in the future as well. You will be working with us on this project (Brand and UX Designers, also part of Open Source Design).

Budget is available and can be set hourly, per illustration/icon or overall project.

UI design, usability testing, and data visualisation for Open Corporate Facts

Open Corporate Facts (OCF) is in early stages. There is no demo site yet.

The vision is building a website for helping journalists, members of ONG, scientists and also simple consumers, to investigate on corporations. It could be seen as the Open Food Facts of corporations.

It aims to build a big database filled with a maximum of financial data publicly disclose by corporations, in a collaborative way with all it’s user.

We are looking for a partner for this project. If you are interested, has some development skill, and motivated by the goal of the project it could really help.

The website would also provide ways to see and explore the data, and even download it.

Basic visualization would be: percentage of money spent by a corporation for its employees, for tax, to buy merchandise, to give to shareholders.

Design for an infographic about Free Software

The result will be used in a brochure that explains the benefits of Free Software to decision makers in public administration and politics. The brochure is part of the campaign “Public Momney, Public Code!”. We want legislation requiring that publicly financed software developed for the public sector be made publicly available under a Free and Open Source Software licence.

We are all about empowering users and bringing their data home. Of course design and UI play a super important role in giving the user an awesome and seamless experience. On the backend we use linked data and blockchain technology. Even if you are not familiar with those and you never heard about decentralization… you will love it soon! Below you see a list of tools and technical and personal skills that accompany our work. But foremost we are looking for passion and tenacity over experience. Are you a curious person and love to learn? Are you open to new ideas and know how to communicate clearly and with empathy? You love to work in an international team?

Tools:

Any UI software would do, but it’s usually a mix of: Sketch, PS, AI, ID
Some prototyping software/service could come in handy too, like UXPin

Tech skills:

Skilled in JavaScript (even without jQuery)
Knowledge of at least one major JS framework: React, Ember, Aurelia, Backbone, Angular, Vue, etc
D3sj is a plus
Experience with CSS concepts: BEM, OOCSS, etc; good understanding of how specificity works
Experience with pre-processors, either SASS or LESS would do
Some experience with task runners Grunt/Gulp (minification, auto-prefixing)
Some knowledge of flexbox

Personal skills:

Ability to fast prototype layouts & interactions
Ability to discuss design issues in depth; problem solver
A good sense (or eye) for design (see portfolio), relates more to the stylistic side rather than functional
Patient and ready to start over

What: working on cutting edge data-driven, high-impact open knowledge projects related to public finances and healthcare with a world-leading non-profit.

Designing and implementing a new user experience around clinical trials data to present complex information to patients and healthcare professionals in a simple way. More than 10,000 people a year die each year in the UK alone from adverse effects to prescribed medications. This project is part of an ongoing effort

Skills and experience wanted

[Essential] Experience designing compelling web-based user experiences presenting information to non-expert users [Essential] Excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS and frontend javascript [Essential] Familiarity and opinions on one or more frontend development frameworks (but paired with flexibility and a lack of dogmatism) [Essential] Good experience with version control tools preferably git and github Desirable Experience in visualization a real plus [Desirable] Agile, sprint-oriented development process Familiarity with free/open-source software and its processes (bonus points if you have run or contributed to an f/oss project) General

With 3-4h timezone of London (we’d love to be more flexible but in our experience it is hard to work effectively with someone further afield) Prior experience working effectively with remote teams You can take the initiative and relish challenge and the ability to work in a self-directed manner in harmony with a broader team Form of Engagement
