There are no time commitments, we work whenever we have time and the only requirement that i have is someone that shares my passion to make the world a better

The ideal person for the job would be someone that is well versed with UI/UX, Branding and any design software of your own choice. Since this is not a paid position i am open to people with any type of experience, we are all together in this journey to grow.

Currently, i have two software projects that i am planning to finish this year. Let me tell you more a bout the first one that would be quicker.

The name is KeyFortress and it’s a new authentication application, with support for end to end encryption, and built in protocol for passwordess authentication, it might be a bit early for the adoption on the market, but being first is never a bad thing.

You can read a bit more on the protocol here:
https://owasp.org/www-pdf-archive/PLA_OWASP_APPSEC_APAC-2012_Conference_V1.2.9.

I have a working version of the application already, and i plan to release it for Windows, Linux, MacOS, IOS, and Android. So i am looking for a partner that is here for the long run, and i do hope that in the process we manage to establish something bigger together.

Currently only IOS and Android have an MVP, but probably the end of the month there will be MVPs for the 3 desktops as well.

The tech stack that i currently use for those that are interested is:

Flutter/Dart - for both the Desktop and Mobile applications
HTMX,Express, Blazor for all web based consumers (Couple of example web pages so we can demonstrate how the login works)
A .Net core API that all of the Web pages use to authenticate against

I am also looking for other roles, so if you want to contribute but don’t find yourself fitting these requirements, hit me up, we will figure something out.

You will see, that the earlier graphics where more simpler, but they made it possible to use it on bags.
While later rendered 3D models where used.
The Bulb from 2022, also inspired the new topic “enlightenment” (with a flashed bulb) maybe?
In the 2022 folder you will find files named component_, to make it more clear how such “component” could look like

It’s seriously some cool stuff full of cool people.

While the team behind it are a great group, as the project grows new features are requiring a skill set we don’t currently have, somebody with an eye for design, knowing how to put the right things things in just the right places to make polished experiences for users.

We hope you might want to join the project and help us take us from the slightly utilitarian approach that many open source projects have to the next level. As this is an open source project that is volunteer based, we’re totally open for different types of relationships. If you love the project and the idea of being a part of it, but only want to jump in when there’s something specific to talk about, that works!
Have questions? Please reach out! I’d love to share the current state of the project and what we’ve been up to recently.

The website helps lawmakers, advocates, and concerned citizens get the tech policy information they need.

The website is currently in development, with IA and UX design work underway.

Several identity guidelines are already in place, including mission, vision, values, and audience. We’re hoping to strike a balance between a tactile, educational feel and a professional and trustworthy polish.

The design process will be iterative, requiring close collaboration with the project team, including: weekly meetings, asynchronous updates, and willingness to be responsive to team direction and ideas.

About us:

We are a small US 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded in 2014 with the goal of making security tools easier to use. We believed – and still do – that security doesn’t have to be confusing to end users. We’ve contributed design to a variety of tools that enhance security, such as Tails to I2P to NoScript. We’ve held salons and a residency around designing for security. But we’ve done a lot more than usable security. Just in the last year, we’ve launched a decentralization pattern library; a report on trust and transparency in nonprofit funding; a campaign to save internet freedom tech; a community around human rights centered design; a series of videos about trust and responsibility in design; and much, much more.

About you:

You love and have demonstrated experience designing identity systems. You are really excited to tell the visual story of a tool that helps people.

You design expressive and accessible screens, logos, and illustrations, meant to be viewed on the web.

You have experience designing websites.

You like working independently, in collaboration with a fully remote team.

You are comfortable advocating for yourself and your work to make sure that you’re getting what you need from us.

Your meeting availability has sufficient overlap with our working hours of 9am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time. The project team is based on the East Coast of the US.

You use tools that facilitate easy, remote collaboration (we use Figma, Notion, and Miro, primarily).

Nice to have:

Awareness of and/or interest in one or more of the following areas: tech criticism and activism, tech policy, human rights, international politics, education.

Knowledge of web accessibility standards.

Sound like a good fit?
Please send us:

3 examples of your work. Please highlight the projects with quick turn-around times (less than 3 months) and tell us, briefly, about the timeline and process: how did these projects get created? Who was involved, what did the process look like, how long did it take?

A (very short!) outline of how you would approach working with us on this project. What phases would this project have, and what would you need from us to make it successful?

-1-2 references. References will be contacted in the last phase of application review.

The times you are available for meetings within our working hours (9am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time)

Send these documents to jobs-brand@simplysecure.org.

Position is open until filled and applications will be evaluated on a rolling review. We will stop accepting applications on July 14, 2021.

So there are a ton of projects we are involved in which all need UX love. This job is about OSArch as an organization getting our own brand together.

Quite a few of us have design educations, there is a bunch of architects & different types of engineers all with a decidedly tech angle.

Here’s how far we are now:
https://osarch.org is looking presentable
https://wiki.osarch.org/ is okay but suffers from a lack of design cohesion
https://community.osarch.org/ is also okay but also doesn’t connect very well with any specific style.
https://learn.osarch.org/ is kind of doing it’s own thing. Again, without a Style Guide it’s hard to know where to start.

We’ve done some work on an OSArch logo on got a good result if you ask me. Variants of the logo are on the intro page.

Now we need to take this logo, be more specific about its use, and find out what it means for our general style.

We’ve had some general discussion before about the look and feel of our website which led to some good things. Focus then moved to the logo.

This is a not a weekend project, we’re looking for someone, or a small group of people, to help us collect our ideas and make a concrete proposal. We have opinions about design, some of us spent years in design educations, but hopefully we also have also enough humility to be guided. Like I said this is not a weekend project, it’s gonna be a process and there’s no massive hurry.

About the money - we don’t have any. But if you have an account on LiberaPay / Patreon or whatever we can work together to get some sponsorship. We support design as a paid profession, but we’re not a legal organization yet, so we can’t pay bills.

In the past, we had a hard time communicating to software developers which of our published standards (XMPP Extension Protocols, XEPs) are most relevant for their use case, as well as communicating to users which XMPP implementations provide the functionality they seek.

To improve the situation, we have created a Compliance Suite for developers to prioritize their work.
The goal of this job is to create a set of badges that developers can attach to their clients and servers to make them more attractive and more discoverable to users.

The Compliance Suite consists of four categories:

Core - minimal functionality

Web - Core plus what is needed for web-based XMPP usage

IM - Core plus what is needed for Instant Messaging

Mobile - Core plus what is needed to run XMPP on mobile devices like smartphones

Each category defines Core and Advanced requirement levels for Clients and Servers.

Ideally, we need badges that depict all combinations of category and requirement levels, e.g.:

“Advanced IM 2019”

“Core Web 2019”

Optionally, it would be great to have distinct badges for Clients and Servers, and also toned-down / deprecated-looking icons for previous generations of the Compliance Suites, e.g:

“Advanced IM Server 2019”

“Core Client 2012” (for a very old spec)

There are also legitimate combinations of categories, e.g:

“Advanced Mobile IM Client 2019”

The badges should represent their relation to the XMPP protocol, e.g. by using the XMPP logo or having the text “XMPP” inside.

It might make sense to design the badges in a button-like look, so that they can be embedded in our list / table of clients.

The shields.io project provides a framework for the generation of minimal badges/shields that could be a possible foundation or inspiration for this work.

To make it possible for the XSF to take measures against abuse of the badges by incompliant implementations, the XSF would need all exploitation rights on the created artwork. The artist should be ready to assign all intellectual property rights according to the XSF IPR policy.

Our Engineering and Design team is a diverse and friendly group that values work-life balance and making the office an enjoyable place to be. We frequently bring snacks to share, have silent movies days and visits from each others pets.

EFF is a great place to work. We offer a supportive and empowering environment, along with an excellent benefits package including housing cost assistance, student loans assistance, medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b)(7) retirement savings program with matching, paid time off, holiday benefits, parental leave, a dog-friendly workplace, and more.

As an advocacy organization, EFF is committed to being part of a diverse community. Diversity of life experiences makes a big difference in how we identify and litigate legal issues, design privacy-enhancing software, and organize our activism. To that end, we deliberately seek applicants with different perspectives, identities, and experiences to build an inclusive workplace to better inform our advocacy and defense of freedom in our digital world. EFF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people of all races, genders, ages, abilities, orientations, ethnicities, and national origins to apply.

This is a full time, salaried, exempt position based in our San Francisco office with full benefits. As this position will collaborate closely with EFF’s activists, attorneys, and technologists, remote work is not an option.

To apply please submit a resume, a cover letter indicating your interest in the position and EFF and a link to an online portfolio of your work at the following link: https://eff.bamboohr.com/jobs/view.php?id=22

It has a dual mode function, which allows for communication and data transfer on two different levels of security.

On the simpler level, it provides an easy-to-use online platform for journalists to store and receive documents on a day-to-day basis. This function is comparatively easy to install, maintain and use, and significantly resembles more commonly used file-sharing systems such as Dropbox and GoogleDocs. This module not only aims at providing journalists with a practical, standardized tool, but also contributing to a change in culture towards improved protection when storing data.

On a more complex level in cases where a much higher level of security is required, journalists can activate a second layer of the tool. Based on the open source communication software SecureDrop, the use of this element is foreseen in cases where a very high level of security is required due to the nature of the information that is being provided by the source.

The name of the tool alludes to its dual function:
a) It refers to the fact that in most cases, journalists and their sources do not need to rely on highly complex technical solutions to communicate safely, and that simple measures of encryption are “enough” to provide the necessary security.
b) It refers to whistleblowers having “enough” of the wrongdoing they are facing, and deciding to report to journalists, while being able to rely on safe communication channels.

We are thus looking for a logo that illustrates the product, and ideally its dual function. Since we are mainly trying to appeal to mainstream journalists, the design should be smooth and simple, rather than complex. Preferred color schemes sunny yellow/white.

In short, to provide a viable alternative solution and to help people protect their private life.
Alternative solution already exists but require technical knowledge and time to setup and maintain. In part because of that, they are not very successful. Arbore is my attempt to change that. I think that such a tool should be as easy to setup and use as VLC.
This project is already well underway and close to a working MVP. That said, I need help from people more knowledgeable than me in UX and UI design to make it really slick and beautiful. I'm just a developer after all ! Even if the current state is not terrible, it could be much better. And on a project like this, it's the difference between success or not.

Organization: Arbore

Status: closed

Compensation: gratis

Role: Interaction design, User interface design

How to Apply:

Michael Muré <batolettre@gmail.com>

http://arbo.re - future homepage, currently redirecting to the github repository

We’d like a logo with a wren / bird theme. As our focus is security products, the logo should be bold and/or more serious than playful; we’d like it to convey a sense of strength and security. We need a logo to differentiate ourselves from the original company.

The original company is called “ForgeRock”; our group is called “Wren Security”, which is a play on “ren” for “renegade”, since our group has broken off from ForgeRock’s group.

We’d like a logo with a wren / bird theme. As our focus is security products, the logo should be bold and/or more serious than playful; we’d like it to convey a sense of strength and security. We’re open to logos that exploit well-known characteristics of wrens (the bird).

Our fork consists of a suite of products:

Wren:AM for access management

Wren:DS for directory services / user storage

Wren:IDM for identity management

Wren:IG for an identity gateway / access proxy

Wren:ICF for an identity connection framework

At the moment, we only need a logo for the project itself, but we’ll likely need to incorporate that logo into the logos for each of the products in the suite as well. So, if the logo is designed with that in mind, that’s ideal.

In the future we’d like to extends these functionalities to be able to work on news articles (text) as well. For more details about the reasons of the project, its philosophy and its goals, you can check this article.

Contribute

Achievements

CaptainFact has a strong gamification aspect. We want to make it pleasant to contribute and reward users bringing positive content. One of the ways to achieve that is achievements, like the ones you see in video games. We need them to be creative and fun, so the main rule here is to take pleasure in what you do ;)

For details about which achievements are currently open to submissions, technical constraints and license stuff checkout this Github issue.

UI / UX

Though we have graphic designers working from time to time on small aspects of the project (logo…etc) we currently don’t have a “main” graphic designer. Your experience, advices and contributions on the website & extension UI / UX would be extremely valuable.
