Help with toolbar icons & interaction design

Avogadro is a leading 3D molecular design and visualization tool, downloaded over 1 million times. As coders and scientists, we need help with icon design and UI / UX as we finish Avogadro 2.0

Our biggest need is for toolbar icons. Beyond the standard “New,” “Open,” “Save,” “Export,” etc. we’re a 3D modeling tool and chemistry set. We need to clearly illustrate in 32x32 or 64x64 icons:

Navigate (translate, rotate, spin)
Draw (freeform molecular sketch)
Template (insert molecule fragments)
Select (e.g., rubber band rectangle)
Manipulate (e.g., pull and push atoms and selections around)
Bond / Angle Manipulate (e.g., tweak lengths and angles rather than move in 3D cartesian coordinates)
Measure (e.g., click on atoms to measure distances, angles, etc.)
Animate (e.g., show a molecular movie / dynamics)
Align (e.g., set the molecule along the X / Y / Z axis)
Auto Optimize (e.g., let the computer find a low energy geometry)
Auto Rotate (e.g., spin the molecule for presentations)

In short, we share some concepts with Blender and CAD programs, but have our own set of tools and needs. Some chemistry experience is probably helpful, but not required. We’ve used our programs with high school and college students and it should be intuitive and fun to use.

Beyond icon design, we’d love some discussion about UI / UX and interaction. We want to strike a balance between “any student can use it” and “plenty of features for experts.” For example a computer graphics student contributed new “layer” features as part of Google Summer of Code and it was eye-opening. They could be used to simplify a lot of tasks – so now we’re wondering what else could improve our experience.

So here is what i would need. I need an Icon in SVG for an SD Card in the menubar of macos. It should look similar to the Battery icon of macos. So if the SD-Card is in the Laptop: The SD-Card Icon would be full like the full battery indicator. If the SD-Card is missing it would be just the outline of the SD-Card, like an empy battery. Icon needed for open source emoji picker "Emote"

Emote currently simply uses an emoji from the Twitter emoji set as its icon. This is by definition not unique at all and I don’t think is particularly aesthetically pleasing either.

I think it would be great if we could come up with a simple logo that is simple, memorable and unique. It doesn’t need to be anything particularly elaborate. It should make sense in the context of it being an emoji picker.

As Emote is a linux app and is predominantly used on the Gnome desktop environment, the icon should conform to the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines for icons, which can be found here - https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/icon-design.html.en.

New icon for Extension

Notification Sound plays a sound when Firefox shows a notification, since not all notification daemons do that.

I made a very basic icon a few years ago that tried to convey what a “notification sound” is, but it was rather… basic from the beginning.

I’d like to have a much smoother icon and in the process of updating it also have a vector (SVG) version.

I’m very open to what the icon actually contains, but I’d rather stick to something that’s not too abstract. The icon is only used as the add-on icon and never exposed in add-on specific GUI (except for the settings page, where Firefox displays it by default).

Create or choose images for a feature-eyecatcher

Delta Chat is the new arising messenger that is compatible to the existing e-mail infrastructure, open-source, pgp-encrypted, secure and all :)

For the first frontend implementation of the app, we’ve taken the Telegram frontend and adapt it to our backend. In between, most things are rewritten and changed, however, there are still some icons that come from the original Telegram code, the icons are used as “eye-catcher” on the website and in the program-welcome-screen and should describe/emphasize roughly the following points:

Independent - Fast - Powerful - Free - Save - Trustworthy

You can see the graphics at https://delta.chat/en/ (wait two seconds until the Delta Chat logo scrolls away).

The current graphics are partly still from the Telegram original source code, which is no licence problem (GPL’d) but it would be finer to have something own. Other graphics are created by me (Björn) in less-than-a-minute just to have anything - these are at least the two checkboxes IIRC.

We would like to have new, preferable unique graphics here. Maybe sth. like Telegram does on its homepage here.

The graphics will be used for the homepage as well as for the app welcome screen (see links below)

The Delta Chat logo itself is okay, IMHO, however, sooner or later we would need slight Material and iOS adaptions, but this is another job …

Emojitwo is a CC-BY-4.0 fork of the popular Emojione 2.2 artwork, because Emojione 3.0 now uses a freemium model without free access to SVG sources.

We are looking for graphic designers to draw SVG glyphs for new emojis matching the established style, who are willing to work pro bono. Some of the existing graphics would also need some retouching, additional variants or a complete redesign, because they don’t fit well with the general theme.

We would also appreciate any help in developing a style guide to describe then harmonize existing emoji images. We found out, for instance, that we could reduce the number of different colors used among emojis without visually affecting how they look, i.e. develop a standard palette.

Hi!

My name is Rory and I founded two open-source projects. FarmBot is an open-source CNC farming machine and web app designed for small scale automated DIY precision farming. OpenFarm is a free and open database for farming and gardening knowledge.

We’re starting to build a drag and drop farm designer/manager tool where one can graphically layout and keep track of plants on a map. Think: Farmville, but with utility! A core visual component of this will be crop icons that visually represent the plants. We want these icons to be usable across different projects, scalable, and beautiful. We have one contributor (@andru) who wants to contribute, and we would love more designers to help us out. We would host the icons on OpenFarm and they would all be licensed very permissively (CC0/MIT) and be avilable for download and via the OpenFarm API.
