Navigate (translate, rotate, spin) Draw (freeform molecular sketch) Template (insert molecule fragments) Select (e.g., rubber band rectangle) Manipulate (e.g., pull and push atoms and selections around) Bond / Angle Manipulate (e.g., tweak lengths and angles rather than move in 3D cartesian coordinates) Measure (e.g., click on atoms to measure distances, angles, etc.) Animate (e.g., show a molecular movie / dynamics) Align (e.g., set the molecule along the X / Y / Z axis) Auto Optimize (e.g., let the computer find a low energy geometry) Auto Rotate (e.g., spin the molecule for presentations) In short, we share some concepts with Blender and CAD programs, but have our own set of tools and needs.
Beyond icon design, we’d love some discussion about UI / UX and interaction. We want to strike a balance between “any student can use it” and “plenty of features for experts.” For example a computer graphics student contributed new “layer” features as part of Google Summer of Code and it was eye-opening. They could be used to simplify a lot of tasks – so now we’re wondering what else could improve our experience.

The design function at OFN is very new and growing and as such is slow moving. This is a project that needs your design support but much is going to be ‘self started’ and while Eriol will be there to help guide you through an open source design project there is still a longer embdedding process that design needs to do before it can move through the ‘pipeline’ of OSS work in OFN quicker.

Organization: Open Food Network

Status: filled

Compensation: gratis

Role: User research, interaction design, visual design

The project is looking for design contributions of all kinds.

Take a look at the design ‘potential initiatives’

The design function at OFN is very new and growing and as such is slow moving. This is a project that needs your design support but much is going to be ‘self started’ and while Eriol will be there to help guide you through an open source design project there is still a longer embdedding process that design needs to do before it can move through the ‘pipeline’ of OSS work in OFN quicker.

The goal is to provide a way for people to share pictures/documents/whatever with their friends/colleagues/contacts privately and safely. The second goal is to reduce the dependency of people to the silo of data that are Facebook, Google, Dropbox ... that trap them. In short, to provide a viable alternative solution and to help people protect their private life.
Alternative solution already exists but require technical knowledge and time to setup and maintain. In part because of that, they are not very successful. Arbore is my attempt to change that. I think that such a tool should be as easy to setup and use as VLC.
This project is already well underway and close to a working MVP. That said, I need help from people more knowledgeable than me in UX and UI design to make it really slick and beautiful. I'm just a developer after all ! Even if the current state is not terrible, it could be much better. And on a project like this, it's the difference between success or not.

Organization: Arbore

Status: closed

Compensation: gratis

Role: Interaction design, User interface design

How to Apply:

Michael Muré <batolettre@gmail.com>

http://arbo.re - future homepage, currently redirecting to the github repository
