We’re looking for a person who can help us design usable, accessible and trustworthy experiences in technically complex and often constrained environments. This is an interesting opportunity to shape the usability of tools that are often built technology-first; i.e. this is a chance to take exciting technologies and turn them into meaningful, solutions that people want to use.

What we need help with
We are looking for someone to address the critical issue in Internet Freedom technology – designing tools people want to use even when times are normal. Too often, people reach for critical connectivity tools only when it’s too late, when the network is down, shutdown, or the website is blocked. We want to embed resilient tooling into friendly services that people want to use, so that when they need us, they already have us.

Designing for decentralized systems introduces a unique set of challenges, including inconsistent connectivity, non-traditional data flows, privacy-sensitive interactions and diverse user contexts. Our main requirement for the new colleague is the ability to understand these constraints, translate them into clear user experiences, and iterate based on real-world usage.

To do this, we expect you to be able to self-start, driving the process from mapping user journeys, to iterative design and testing and rollout. You will be simplifying complex concepts such as peer-to-peer content sharing, decentralized system set up, ensuring the product remains accessible to non-technical users, and incorporating feedback. You would be the only designer on the team, but we work together, so you’re not alone.

Given the nature of our work, UX research can play a central role. You will work closely with developers, researchers and field teams in various parts of the world to gather insights from users operating in restrictive or low-connectivity environments, and translate those insights into actionable design improvements.

We are looking for a subset of these skills

Strong experience in UX design for web and/or mobile applications
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and usable interfaces
Experience with user research methods, including remote or constrained-context research
Proficiency with design and prototyping tools (e.g. Figma or similar)
Experience working closely with developers in iterative product environments
Nice to have

Experience designing for privacy, security or peer-to-peer systems
Familiarity with decentralized technologies or offline-first design patterns
Experience contributing to open-source projects
Background in interaction design, information architecture or service design
Strong interest in digital rights, internet freedom and usability in high-risk contexts
Work schedule
eQualitie is global, so you will have to coordinate with your team to find a time that works for all of you. Otherwise, you do your work when you work.

How to apply
Please send your resume and a cover letter to hireme|at|equalitie|dot|org explaining how your experience and motivation match our needs. Include a portfolio of relevant work demonstrating your UX process and outcomes. If applicable, include links to projects involving complex systems, research-driven design or open-source contributions.

eQualitie welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. We are a remote-first company and offer flexible working arrangements. We are keen to hear from people who consider themselves under-represented in the software, technology or FLOSS communities.

https://www.figma.com/design/I9McFfaLu1RiiWp5IP3YjE/activist_public_designs?node-id=805-231&t=d1juzOkj8Yev6h94-1

There are many parts of the designs that haven’t been finalized yet, and lots of minor issues that have been fixed in the code, but haven’t been updated in the designs. The goal would be to develop relationships with one or more designers so that we can collaborate as needed. The idea would be that we’d use our private Figma file and once designs are finished they’ll be moved over to the public one :)

There are no time commitments, we work whenever we have time and the only requirement that i have is someone that shares my passion to make the world a better

The ideal person for the job would be someone that is well versed with UI/UX, Branding and any design software of your own choice. Since this is not a paid position i am open to people with any type of experience, we are all together in this journey to grow.

Currently, i have two software projects that i am planning to finish this year. Let me tell you more a bout the first one that would be quicker.

The name is KeyFortress and it’s a new authentication application, with support for end to end encryption, and built in protocol for passwordess authentication, it might be a bit early for the adoption on the market, but being first is never a bad thing.

You can read a bit more on the protocol here:
https://owasp.org/www-pdf-archive/PLA_OWASP_APPSEC_APAC-2012_Conference_V1.2.9.

I have a working version of the application already, and i plan to release it for Windows, Linux, MacOS, IOS, and Android. So i am looking for a partner that is here for the long run, and i do hope that in the process we manage to establish something bigger together.

Currently only IOS and Android have an MVP, but probably the end of the month there will be MVPs for the 3 desktops as well.

The tech stack that i currently use for those that are interested is:

Flutter/Dart - for both the Desktop and Mobile applications
HTMX,Express, Blazor for all web based consumers (Couple of example web pages so we can demonstrate how the login works)
A .Net core API that all of the Web pages use to authenticate against

I am also looking for other roles, so if you want to contribute but don’t find yourself fitting these requirements, hit me up, we will figure something out.

November 2, 2021

The Tor Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization advancing human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, is seeking a Brand Designer to be a part of the User Experience Team.

As a Brand Designer, you will be responsible for the creative direction of The Tor Project’s identity wherever it is presented, ensuring our visual language is both compelling and cohesive across the organization.

Though small, the UX Team at the Tor Project is a “full stack” design team – encompassing the disciplines of graphic design, interface design, experience design, and ethical user research. Our mission is to promote the principles of human-centered design across the organization and the wider Tor community, improving our users’ experiences at each point along the way.

This is a full-time remote position. Salary is $75,000 USD/year.

Job Requirements

In this role, you will:

Establish a clear identity and brand voice, including the development of a multi-platform brand style guide to provide greater consistency going forward.

Lead the creative development of our annual Year End Campaign, alongside other major fundraising and awareness campaigns throughout the year.
- Support broader content marketing efforts on social media, email, the Tor Project blog, press releases and more.

Produce and manage the Tor Project’s documentation templates, including reports, presentations, workshop and training materials, and anything else required by the team.

Create high-fidelity web designs, particularly for the websites we operate that are less technical and more brand focussed (e.g. www.torproject.org).

Collaborate extensively with and receive design critiques from the User Experience, Communications, and Fundraising teams.

Additionally, you will occasionally be expected to provide ad hoc product design support for the UX Team, including the creation of high-fidelity user interface designs and helping to maintain our web and product design systems. However, you will not be expected to undertake complex User Experience and/or Information Architecture tasks, and support from a dedicated UX Designer will always be available.

Required experience:

Experience designing primarily for digital brands. Although we do some print material, our audience and brand is online.

Ability to produce original illustrations, iconography and a good understanding of typography (on that last point, we advocate for using Free and Open Source fonts wherever possible).

Excellent proficiency with vector design tools.

High level of organization in all aspects of the design process, from producing clean vectors, to the organization of your design files, and maintaining consistency with established style guides wherever possible.

Comfortable working remotely with a global team distributed across many timezones.

Sufficient proficiency in English to be able to accurately present and receive feedback on your work.

Preferred experience (not required):

Experience collaborating with other designers in Figma, our vector design tool of choice. However should you not have experience with Figma directly – don’t worry! It should be easy for anyone used to Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Sketch, Adobe XD or similar software to pick up.

A history of designing or advocating for the causes of free-software, open source technology, human-rights, privacy, censorship-circumvention or an interest in internet-freedom in general.
Familiarity with the challenges faced by our users who are subject to surveillance and censorship.
- Experience producing 3D graphics or short animations – although this is not neccessary for the role, and would simply be an added bonus.

How to Apply

To apply, submit a cover letter, your CV/resumé and a link to or copy of a portfolio featuring recent samples of your work. In your cover letter, please include the reason you want to work at the Tor Project and explain how your qualifications meet those required in the job description.
IMPORTANT: Please email application materials in PDF format (where applicable) to job-ux at torproject dot org with “Brand Designer” in the subject line.

It is already pretty full featured, but the UX can be a bit rough at times. One main usability problem is the actual “password entry” because it is pretty flexible. It has a basic set of “fields” but can be extended to include custom fields. There also a few different types of fields (plain text, passwords, TOTP).
Right now it is the same UI for viewing and editing. Which is imho nice and if possible something to keep. But users are sometimes irritated and fearful of modifying their passwords while viewing, which could be a point to improve upon.

Organization: AuthPass - Password Manager

Status: expired

Compensation: gratis

Role: Interaction design

AuthPass is a cross platform, open source password manager. Its inspired by the vim editor and similar to projects like Tridactyl, Vimperator or Vimium.
Due to its userbase, its UI design is rather minimalistic. However, some users feel like the default theme looks dated or ugly. I’d like to find out what can be done about that, while keeping the minimalism of its user interface.

What you will be doing

You will be part of a team working on web applications for enterprise cloud services, IoT and embedded devices, bringing exciting new projects to life and improving existing ones.

You will be leading your product-specific projects, driving design and delivery against agreed goals and working with designers, product management and engineering to deliver on the strategic vision for Canonical.

You will liaise with relevant stakeholders and engineers to achieve company goals, making time to talk via messaging applications, setting up and attending regular meetings, reviewing work with them in advance, sharing progress and seeking their input to achieve consensus and drive progress.

So far, we were busy building the basics in our tech side, like some standards of coding and defining the architecture to get the data and as well to send the data to the end-user, but now we are missing this important member to achieve an awesome design and a great user experience.

Organization: Urban Noise

Status: filled

Compensation: gratis

Role: Web design and UX research

Hello everyone,

Three epics were written based on the user research report for the developer persona:
get data from data.tricoteuses.fr understand data from data.tricoteuses.fr update data from data.tricoteuses.fr This is hopefully enough to create a pencil based UX prototype. The current https://data.tricoteuses.fr web site must not be used as an inspiration.
It should however be used to find out how git repositories can be displayed, how a documentation page can be displayed etc. https://data.tricoteuses.fr currently is a randomly organized collection of things the user needs. The closer a UX prototype is to how an individual thing is presented, the easier the implementation will be. For instance, the git repositories display relies on the GitLab user interface and modifying it, even slightly, means re-implementing the user interface entirely (or maintaining a modified fork of GitLab which is even more work). A balance must be found between the desired UX and the cost of implementing it when a similar (but less effective) UX already exists in an off-the-shelf software.

Organization: tricoteuses

Status: filled

Compensation: gratis

Role: Interaction Design

The Tricoteuses non-profit collective wants to publish datasets originating from the French national assembly at data.tricoteuses.fr for software developers to use.
We are being run by a large community on slack, here is the link ( www.slack.codeuino.org )

What we need to have is we currently have some Mockups displayed on our github Repo but we have planned to change since we are developing new modules so that would required new UI.

So we need to have a good looking “Feeds Page” what we see in facebook but this page should not be exactly similar to facebook, linkedin feedspage. We need to have a unique layout.
Along with this Dashboard mockup is required. There exist 2 dashboards that is one for community and other for individual users. So new and different design for both.

An exciting open source project giving you the chance to get engaged in helping our democratic systems survive as well as a perfect reference in design

You won’t be alone and exchange regularly with the project manager. On top, you’ll receive regular feedback from a senior designer, if you wish.

To do so, it reads files from a local library (or first imports them from our servers) and displays them as the original websites would appear online. The goal is to provide a way for people to share pictures/documents/whatever with their friends/colleagues/contacts privately and safely. The second goal is to reduce the dependency of people to the silo of data that are Facebook, Google, Dropbox ... that trap them. In short, to provide a viable alternative solution and to help people protect their private life.
Alternative solution already exists but require technical knowledge and time to setup and maintain. In part because of that, they are not very successful. Arbore is my attempt to change that. I think that such a tool should be as easy to setup and use as VLC.
This project is already well underway and close to a working MVP. That said, I need help from people more knowledgeable than me in UX and UI design to make it really slick and beautiful. I'm just a developer after all ! Even if the current state is not terrible, it could be much better. And on a project like this, it's the difference between success or not.

Organization: Arbore

Status: closed

Compensation: gratis

Role: Interaction design, User interface design

How to Apply:

Michael Muré <batolettre@gmail.com>

http://arbo.re - future homepage, currently redirecting to the github repository

I’m looking for design help on mocking up a hospitalized patient management module in OpenEMR. Most clinicians that use the system don’t work in a hospital setting, but it’s important that we better support those that do, especially in developing countries. This will open doors for healthcare providers that previously couldn’t use the system because of such limitations.
About the system:

Organization: OpenEMR

Status: filled

Compensation: gratis

Role: Healthcare, UX, UI

My name is Matthew Vita, a project admin on OpenEMR.
About the system:

OpenEMR is the most popular open source electronic health records and medical practice management solution. ONC certified with international usage, OpenEMR’s goal is a superior alternative to its proprietary counterparts. With passionate volunteers and contributors dedicated to guarding OpenEMR’s status as a free, open source software solution for medical practices with a commitment to openness, kindness and cooperation.

If we could get one, the other programmers and I could start down the right path! This is a big project, but I’m confident that a UX/UI guru could really help lay the landscape.
