About the Role

Ura Design is looking for a part-time Junior Visual Designer to join our team based in Berlin, with the option to work remotely. This is a part-time role (20h/week) in the non-profit sectors of open source, digital rights and internet freedom. As part of our team, you will assist in creating impactful infographics, data visualizations, reports, and layout designs for various non-profit sectors, helping our clients communicate their important messages effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Design materials that adhere to brand identity and style guidelines.
Assist in developing client presentations with the our Lead Visual Designer.
Create custom design solutions based on client needs.
Collaborate with external clients and projects, including journalists and other stakeholders in the security and internet freedom space.
Contribute new ideas to enhance our design portfolio.

Experience

Minimum 1 year of experience in Graphic Design, preferably in Digital Media.
Proficiency in Figma is required; experience with other design tools such as Penpot and Canva is a plus.
Proficiency with Adobe InDesign is a strong plus.
Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
Fluent in English; knowledge of German or Arabic is a strong plus.
Ability to manage tight deadlines and communicate effectively with internal and external teams.
Strong problem-solving abilities and multitasking skills.

Non-Essential But Desirable

Basic knowledge of web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).

3+ years of experience in a designer role as part of a team, or comparable experience, including: helping to take a product feature from concept to delivery and use; breaking down design solutions into prioritized, shippable increments; building and sharing design prototypes at different levels of fidelity and interactivity
Comfort working as part of a fully distributed team
At least 4 hours time zone overlap with US Pacific Time or US Eastern Time working hours for real-time collaboration

Simply Secure is looking to contract a visual designer who can bring their expertise in web design and crafting brand identities to a new educational website and resource repository launching in August 2021. The website helps lawmakers, advocates, and concerned citizens get the tech policy information they need.
The website is currently in development, with IA and UX design work underway.
Several identity guidelines are already in place, including mission, vision, values, and audience. We’re hoping to strike a balance between a tactile, educational feel and a professional and trustworthy polish.

We are a small US 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded in 2014 with the goal of making security tools easier to use. We believed – and still do – that security doesn’t have to be confusing to end users. We’ve contributed design to a variety of tools that enhance security, such as Tails to I2P to NoScript. We’ve held salons and a residency around designing for security. But we’ve done a lot more than usable security. Just in the last year, we’ve launched a decentralization pattern library; a report on trust and transparency in nonprofit funding; a campaign to save internet freedom tech; a community around human rights centered design; a series of videos about trust and responsibility in design; and much, much more.

LibreOffice plans the next major release of version 6.0. In order to have a unique design we want to updated the branding, which is basically the splash screen, the installer on Windows, the about dialog, and some banners/flyers/stickers outside the program. The task is to design a new motif that conveys the metaphors:

Transparency, Sustainability, Freedom
Community with the additional ideas of
MUFFIN
Green
Hexagon
Circular

The design has to follow the restrictions of colors and the general identification as stated at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding. The font “Vegur” has been selected for the use within the LibreOffice logo and accompanying text. The design concept must work globally. We want to include the community into the process and run a survey with some different proposals. Therefore the job should be finished until end of July 2017.

In a first internal poll the big digit “5” in the current design was criticized http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Branding-for-LibreOffice-6-0-tt4210681.html.

Deliverables

New branding idea

Raw data ideally in ODF, but SVG is also good (but no proprietary formats)

Designer / Art Director needed for a new demo included in Drupal core

What are we looking for?

A person willing to contribute work as a designer and art director for a new demo website being created for inclusion in Drupal core. Having prior experience with any open source project is certainly a bonus, but is not a necessary requirement. You will be working alongside a team of experienced Drupal contributors who will help you get started working with an open source community.

Project overview

We plan to create a demo website (in the form of an installation profile) of Drupal. Users will be able to try this out when installing Drupal. The main purpose of this demo is to convince technical evaluators that Drupal allows them to build modern and beautiful websites, from conceptions into real life use cases. The demo use case will be a food publishing website. We plan to leave all Drupal-related terminology out of the demo. This is to make sure that there is a separation between the branding of Drupal and demonstrating Drupal. There is no pre-existing designs to leverage. We plan to give the designer carte blanche.

Process

The lead designer will work closely with the team working on the demo to create a proposal for the Drupal community. Our community will be allowed to give feedback on the designs at certain defined stages of the project, however decisions and feedback about the designs will be handled at the team’s own discretion.

The design lead is expected to actively participate in our public weekly meetings.

Timeline

The team is expecting to get started with the project as soon as possible after the application period. The team lead is expected to commit to the process throughout. The majority of time needed from the designer will be in the early stages of the project. During this stage you will be expected to work as a visual designer creating the initial design. After the initial design has been approved, the designer will transition into an art director role where they will be responsible for monitoring the quality of the implementation of the design.

The MVP version of the demo is planned to be added to Drupal 8.4, which means that the last day for getting the theme committed is July 29th 2017.

Budget

There is no budget to pay people for working on this initiative. However, it is allowed for everyone working on it to have support from the organizations they work for, or any other organization that would like to fund their work.
