Orchard Core CMS admin UX revamp

We’re looking for a UX professional to renew the admin (dashboard) experience of the CMS Orchard Core, i.e. where the owners of a site edit content, manage users, change settings, etc. If you enjoy open-source, have worked with such projects before, and perhaps want to get your name on another one as a contributor, then this can be you! (Being a developer, even a frontend one, is NOT necessary, we’d write the code. But if you do code, then all the better.)

Orchard Core is an open-source, community-driven framework and CMS built on ASP.NET Core. It’s among the most active .NET open-source projects.

The admin looks something like this currently. We don’t think we want to rebuild it down to the last pixel, but rather, we’d need new foundations, better ways for the usual, common UI elements (like navigation, notifications, forms…), and guidelines on how to keep it consistent. The goal is for us to have a modern admin UX that’s functional, convenient, and unobtrusive, and something that ordinary contributors can extend by following patterns. We don’t want to have to awkwardly explain to newcomers that, well, this was built by developers for developers, don’t expect top UX on the admin, it’s rough not just around the edges.

The content strategy working group of The Good Docs Project is about to embark on a refresh of our website.

We are a group of technical writers and developers, and would love input from a designer.

We want to choose a new theme, and it would be good to make some pre-emptive creative decisions to make our lives easier when applying that theme. For example, we’ll need to answer questions like “Which blue? Now we need another color - what contrasts well with this blue? Is it accessible?” etc.

Our project has a main product: templates. It also has subsidiary products, one of which, the Chronologue, has its own branding (this is already established). We’ve also got a blog.

We need a primary and secondary color scheme to gives us enough flexibility to tie our products in to the one family. We’ll probably use a Hugo theme, and a theme color generator but it would be nice to get input from a designer.

Imagine you’re blowing the whistle on government abuse. How do you get in touch with a news organization? How do you stay safe and anonymous?
Imagine you’re a journalist receiving a stash of documents. How do you protect yourself against malware? How do you protect your source while examining these documents?

You’ll work on interaction design, visual design, prototyping, user research - all in close collaboration with the development team. While SecureDrop will be your focus, you will also partner with our web development team on improving our websites, including freedom.press and our second flagship project, the US Press Freedom Tracker.

You have…

3+ years of experience in a designer role as part of a team, or comparable experience, including: helping to take a product feature from concept to delivery and use; breaking down design solutions into prioritized, shippable increments; building and sharing design prototypes at different levels of fidelity and interactivity
Comfort working as part of a fully distributed team
At least 4 hours time zone overlap with US Pacific Time or US Eastern Time working hours for real-time collaboration

Simply Secure is looking to contract a visual designer who can bring their expertise in web design and crafting brand identities to a new educational website and resource repository launching in August 2021. We’ve held salons and a residency around designing for security. But we’ve done a lot more than usable security. Just in the last year, we’ve launched a decentralization pattern library; a report on trust and transparency in nonprofit funding; a campaign to save internet freedom tech; a community around human rights centered design; a series of videos about trust and responsibility in design; and much, much more.

Web design for qutebrowser, a web browser for power users

The qutebrowser project is a web browser for power users, focused on keyboard usage. Its inspired by the vim editor and similar to projects like Tridactyl, Vimperator or Vimium.

As part of the browser, there are various internal web pages, e.g. to view bookmarks or history. The design of those pages is fairly inconsistent and could be improved.

Additionally, it’s planned to switch toolkits for the project’s website qutebrowser.org (from Asciidoc to Sphinx), so a redesign or porting of the existing design to Sphinx is needed. Finally, its development blog (blog.qutebrowser.org) has yet another design which is not in-line with the website.

It’d be great if you used similar projects before (and/or the vim editor, and/or commandline-tools in general), so that you can get a feeling for its userbase. Knowledge of the Python-related frameworks in use (Jinja, Sphinx, Pelican) would be a plus.

It is our goal to create a set of libraries, that allow unified access to any type of Programmable Logic Controllers.

Our website, especially our home page is not meeting our needs in communicating with two different groups, our clients and our developers.

In order to deliver these messages we want to update the look and feel of our site to have a more modern and professional feel.

Mocha is a testing framework, and the most depended-upon project in the npm ecosystem.

…but our site was built in (literally) 2011. That said, this old horse gets about 200k page hits a month over the past year (it’s a single page).

Our site should still be focused on documentation (tutorials and dry API docs), but would also like to add a “news” or “blog” section. Let’s move away from “one huge page” and organize it properly. The site should be responsive, accessible and lightweight.

A new logo and/or logotype would be desirable. Our tagline is “simple, flexible, fun”; ultimately the design of the logo and site should reflect that. We plan to put the logo(s) on shirts, stickers, and swag.

Donations the project has received could pay for the work. We are all volunteers, but we don’t have enough time nor skill to pull this off ourselves. You can do this for free, but we want you to be motivated!

What are we looking for?

A person willing to contribute work as a designer and art director for a new demo website being created for inclusion in Drupal core. Having prior experience with any open source project is certainly a bonus, but is not a necessary requirement. You will be working alongside a team of experienced Drupal contributors who will help you get started working with an open source community.

Project overview

We plan to create a demo website (in the form of an installation profile) of Drupal. Users will be able to try this out when installing Drupal. The main purpose of this demo is to convince technical evaluators that Drupal allows them to build modern and beautiful websites, from conceptions into real life use cases. The demo use case will be a food publishing website. We plan to leave all Drupal-related terminology out of the demo. This is to make sure that there is a separation between the branding of Drupal and demonstrating Drupal. There is no pre-existing designs to leverage. We plan to give the designer carte blanche.

Process

The lead designer will work closely with the team working on the demo to create a proposal for the Drupal community. Our community will be allowed to give feedback on the designs at certain defined stages of the project, however decisions and feedback about the designs will be handled at the team’s own discretion.

The design lead is expected to actively participate in our public weekly meetings.

Timeline

The team is expecting to get started with the project as soon as possible after the application period. The team lead is expected to commit to the process throughout. The majority of time needed from the designer will be in the early stages of the project. During this stage you will be expected to work as a visual designer creating the initial design. After the initial design has been approved, the designer will transition into an art director role where they will be responsible for monitoring the quality of the implementation of the design.

The MVP version of the demo is planned to be added to Drupal 8.4, which means that the last day for getting the theme committed is July 29th 2017.

Budget

There is no budget to pay people for working on this initiative. However, it is allowed for everyone working on it to have support from the organizations they work for, or any other organization that would like to fund their work.

Design The Simplest Landing Page

I’m writing an open-source tool dedicated to landing-page : https://bdavidxyz.github.io/zee/

Here is why :

-> commercial tool like unbounce, strikingly, leadpages, etc allow creation of “fat” landing pages, that displays slowly on the customer’s screen. Since a customer doesn’t stay longer than 5 second on the screen, commercial tools are not a very good option.

-> these commercial tools have sometimes a very bad opinion on how a landing page should be build. Some templates Sometimes call-to-action are not big enough, sometimes base font is too small… choosing a template according to the bugs is also a very bad idea.

-> there is also the possibility to use a bootstrap template, free or commercial, to build your landing page. Now there are still drawbacks :

still have to customize some parts of it. Once you spend some hard time working on the template it could be hard to switch to another that convert better.
starting with a template is not a good option for landing pages, startups should start with copywriting, build the message, then define an atmosphere and build the template.
you can’t reuse one beautiful section or beautiful navbar that you liked on this other site.

So in my humble opinion, the right way to start a landing page is :

Minimalistic template, just black & white color.
Only one primary color for call to action, icons and links. Easily defined by the topic your business is about (pink = girly, green = games, etc)
Ultra fast displaying : no jQuery, no big background image, etc
Each section (navbar, testimonial, hero, etc) can be easily replaced by another in order to AB/test very fast without too much effort.

So as you can see as started to write some sections on the repo.

I need a designer to make the landing page beautiful enough.
